Located on the plains of the Tajo and Alberche rivers, Talavera de la Reina has been famous for centuries for its pottery. It is also the main town in the province of Toledo.
The most outstanding monuments in the city are the Santa Catalina bridge; the 17th century Baroque Archbishop's Palace, located in the Plaza del Pan, the nerve centre of life for the people of Talavera; or the Cervantes school, with a Renaissance façade.
There are many religious buildings, among which the most notable are the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, from the end of the 12th century, in Gothic-Mudejar style, with a magnificent façade and tower, a large main altarpiece and a beautiful cloister; the Mudejar church of Santiago, with Gothic influences; the Basilica of the Virgen del Prado, a true museum of the famous Talavera tilework, built between the 16th and 17th centuries; and the Renaissance church of San Prudencio, from the 16th century.
